Welcome to Day 12 of our Top of the World tour
Today we are at the Hemis Festival. This morning we’ve driven 40km to the village of Hemis and up to the monastery which is hidden away in a gorge. Hemis gompa is the largest and richest monastery in Ladakh and plays host to this festival every year.
The festival celebrates the birth of Padmasambhava, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism, the Lamas perform sacred masked dances, called Chams accompanied by drums, cymbals and long horns. It is a spectacle that is mesmerising and oh so powerful to experience.
In the evening we were treated to a home cooked dinner at our guides home – a traditional Ladakhi family home.
